Romantic relationship in Central African Republic

Dating and courtship in the Central African Republic are mainly informal. No state dating institution, licence, standard registration, mandatory counselling or nationally fixed cost has been established. People commonly meet through personal and family networks, religious communities or local community actors. The terms mariage, union, cohabitation and union de fait describe different relationship situations, while the Code de la Famille governs formal marriage and related family matters. Marriage is a formal transition. The minimum age is 18 for both sexes. A Procureur de la République may grant a dispensation for serious reasons, and anyone under 18 also needs consent from a parent or guardian. Both people must consent during the ceremony. Registration is legally required. A birth certificate, a pre-marital medical certificate and a declaration concerning the dowry are listed as prerequisites. The marriage certificate is issued immediately and without charge, while local registration or filing fees can vary by municipality. A marriage certificate can declare either monogamy or polygamy; reforms to the Family Code remained under discussion in 2023 on polygamy, cohabitation, union de fait, household leadership, residence and household expenses. Unmarried cohabitation has less certain and more fragmented legal protection than formal marriage. A couple should not assume that living together automatically creates the same rights or duties as a registered marriage. Formal divorce, property division and inheritance belong to civil-law topics and are not resolved merely by describing a romantic relationship. Consent applies to every intimate act and cannot be replaced by marriage, family approval, payment or social pressure. An older United Nations report found no statutory minimum age for sexual relations, while the Penal Code was still under revision in 2023. The absence of a statutory age threshold does not create consent, and the Child Protection Code protects children against abuse, violence and exploitation. Health facilities, mobile or static clinics, condoms and youth-focused information are available options, but limited comprehensive sexuality education, social norms, supply stock-outs, distance, transport and insecurity can prevent access. Reported sexual initiation before 15 affected 29.7% of women aged 15 to 24 and 10.6% of men in the same age group. Violence within relationships requires protection and referral, not private mediation alone. Intimate-partner violence affected 21% of ever-partnered women and girls aged 15 or older in the 2018 finding, and 11,717 gender-based-violence cases were recorded in the second quarter of 2022. Domestic violence and sexual harassment are criminal offences, but marital rape was not criminalized in the available findings. Health, social, police and justice referrals, joint rapid-response units in Bangui and Bouar, women and girls’ safe spaces, temporary shelters and empowerment centres in Bangui can provide medical, psychosocial or legal support. Access varies sharply because of conflict, distance, limited resources and stigma, and state compensation for survivors of sexual violence was not available in the reported system. A person leaving a relationship may need a safety plan, medical care, psychosocial support, legal referral or temporary shelter. The practical process depends on location, available services and immediate danger; no reliable national standard for separation costs or timing is established. Formal dissolution and disputes over property or inheritance require separate civil-law advice.
