History in Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde's history developed through Portuguese colonisation, Atlantic trade, African enslavement, Creole society, migration and national liberation. Portuguese navigators reached the islands in May 1460, settlement on Santiago began in 1462, and Ribeira Grande, later called Cidade Velha, became a major Atlantic port. Independence followed on 5 July 1975, while constitutional pluralism and multiparty democracy developed from 1990 onward.
