Study in Cameroon

Cameroon’s higher-education system is formally established and operates in a French- and English-speaking environment. National responsibility lies with the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP). The public system includes eleven universities, including the University of Bamenda, the University of Buea, the University of Douala, the University of Dschang, and the Universities of Yaoundé 1 and Yaoundé 2. It also includes public specialized higher schools (Grandes Écoles), IUTs, ENS and ENSET, as well as medical and technical institutions. The MINESUP list also includes around 430 private higher-education institutions (IPES). Entry usually begins with the Baccalaureate (BAC), GCE Advanced Level (GCE A/L), or a recognized equivalent qualification. Programmes and institutions may require additional minimum subjects. Grandes Écoles and many professionally oriented programmes admit students through a competitive entrance examination (concours) or another selection process; places, calls for applications, and dates change annually. The usual process includes an online application, supporting documents or certified copies, an examination or selection, an admission letter, fees and medical documents, and registration for classes. MINESUP sets the national academic calendar each year, while the institution’s specific deadline remains binding. The Licence–Master–Doctorate structure (LMD) organizes academic degrees into a Licence degree (Licence), Master, and Doctorate (Doctorat) or PhD. A Master usually requires a recognized Bachelor’s or Licence degree; a Doctorate or PhD generally requires a recognized Master’s degree and a current call for applications from the institution. A Professional Licence (Licence Professionnelle) can follow the Baccalaureate or GCE Advanced Level and may take three years, or six semesters, while combining higher education, a professional environment, an internship, and a report, depending on the applicable rules. Other professional tertiary routes include a Higher Technician Certificate (BTS), a Higher National Diploma (HND), and a University Diploma of Technology (DUT). Private institutions differ in status and degree-awarding authority. MINESUP distinguishes, among other things, authorization (autorisation), approval (agrément), and degree-awarding accreditation (homologation). Only homologation gives an institution full university authority to award degrees independently. An authorized but not yet homologated institution may operate under the supervision of a public university. Before making a payment, check the current MINESUP list, the status of the specific branch, the programme, and the authority to award diplomas. There is no single total price for higher education in Cameroon. Fees depend on the institution, programme, study level, and in some cases nationality or Central African Economic and Monetary Community status (CEMAC). Examples from calls for applications state that for 2026/27 the University of Dschang charges 300,000 FCFA for a Professional Licence, around 450,000 to 1,000,000 FCFA for many Master’s programmes, and up to 2,000,000 FCFA for certain specialized programmes. An example from the University of Buea gives 250,000 FCFA per year for an HTTC programme. Medical examinations, learning materials, transport, and accommodation are often additional; every amount must be checked against the current call for applications. MINESUP scholarships, external government offers, partial scholarships, mobility programmes, and the work-study programme (Work Study Programme) may support financing, but they do not create an automatic entitlement. During the programme, course and semester registration, lectures, TD or TP sessions, continuous assessment, examinations, projects, and, depending on the programme, internships are part of the process. Students are entitled to scheduled academic activities, academic and career guidance, and protection of their physical and moral integrity. They must comply with study and campus rules, academic integrity requirements, and examination regulations. Violations may lead to disciplinary measures. After graduation, students receive, depending on the procedure, a relevé de notes, an attestation de réussite, and a diplôme. DCAA and MINESUP are involved in national diploma issuance, verification, authentication, and equivalence procedures. Recognition of a foreign qualification involves an application, authentication, review by the CNE, and an equivalence (équivalence); a 2025 notice states 25,000 FCFA per application file. Recognition may also be supported by a bilateral or multilateral agreement, an approved higher-education agreement, or an existing equivalence table. Further options include employment, another Licence, a Master’s degree or doctorate, research, an internship, entering the labour market, and student entrepreneurship.
