The Ministry of Basic Education oversees pre-primary and primary education. The Ministry of Secondary Education oversees general and technical secondary education through regional and divisional offices and school inspections. Schools may be public, private, confessional or community-based, and private schools should have the required registration or annual authorization because unregistered institutions may face closure. Pre-primary education is available through public, private and community providers but is not compulsory. Primary school normally lasts six years and is compulsory by law. Public primary tuition is free in principle, but families may still pay for books, uniforms, supplies, transport, meals, examinations or parent and community contributions. In the French-speaking system, completion is associated with the Certificat d'études primaires (CEP); in the English-speaking system, pupils work toward the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC). A birth certificate is required for the final primary examination. General secondary education differs between the two official-language systems. In the French-speaking system, it normally lasts seven years: four years in the first cycle and three years in the second cycle. The Brevet d'études du premier cycle (BEPC) follows the first cycle, the Probatoire comes during the second cycle and the Baccalauréat follows the final year. In the English-speaking system, it normally lasts seven years with five years in the first cycle and two years in the second cycle; the main examinations are the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level and Advanced Level. Arts and science streams are available, although the exact offer depends on the school. The technical branch is school-based under the Ministry of Secondary Education and commonly lasts four years in the first cycle and three years in the second cycle, with qualifications such as the Certificat d'aptitude professionnelle, the technical Probatoire, the technical Baccalauréat or the Brevet de Technicien. Vocational education after school belongs to a separate field. French and English are the two official languages, and the language of instruction, examination board and certificate depend on the school subsystem. Bilingual schools or sections may combine both languages, while some schools provide additional local-language support. Continuous assessment, term examinations, end-of-year examinations, sports and other school activities form part of daily school life. The national school year usually runs from September to June in three terms, but the current calendar, examination dates, teaching hours and remediation arrangements follow annual decisions by the education authorities. Children normally enrol through a school and the relevant local education authorities. Entry into lower secondary school follows completion of primary education and the applicable CEP, FSLC or current admission rules. Transfers and reintegration after interruption may be possible, but the school and local authorities need to confirm the available place and documents. Fees at secondary level vary by school type and annual notice. Distance, poverty, missing birth certificates, disability exclusion, teacher and infrastructure shortages, displacement and insecurity can interrupt schooling, especially in the Far North, North-West and South-West regions. Cameroon has no universal standalone special-school system established across the country. The National Inclusive Education Policy validated in 2024 supports inclusion in mainstream schools, adapted teaching, Braille, sign-language and psychosocial support, while special, community, faith-based and NGO services exist unevenly. Availability depends on the location, the child’s needs and the capacity of the school. The right to education, equality and non-discrimination apply alongside duties concerning attendance, school rules, assessment and guardian documentation, but practical protection and access are not equally strong in every area.
School in Cameroon
Schools in Cameroon cover pre-primary, six-year primary education and general or technical secondary education. Public and private schools include French-speaking, English-speaking and bilingual systems, and the curriculum, responsible ministry and examination certificate depend on the level and subsystem. Primary education is compulsory by law, while access, costs and continuity vary with location, school status, household resources and security conditions. Registration, required documents and the transition to the next level should be checked with the school and local education authorities.
