History in Cameroon

Cameroon's modern borders do not represent a single historical realm. Archaeological evidence from Shum Laka in the Grassfields of the Northwest shows human activity at least 32,000 years ago, with 18 human skeletons dating from about 3,000 to 8,000 years ago. The evidence supports a long transition from the Stone Age to metalworking in the area, but findings from one region should not be generalized to the whole country. Theories about Bantu language origins and migrations describe regional processes and do not provide one simple explanation for Cameroon's population history. Before colonial rule, the northern and western regions were connected to Sahelian and Lake Chad routes. Kanem-Bornu influence, Adamawa emirates and lamidats, and Grassfields chiefdoms and kingdoms developed under changing forms of authority. A lamidat is a territory governed by a lamido, while a chefferie is a chiefdom led by a traditional authority. The Bamum kingdom is especially well documented through court histories and the writing system associated with Sultan Njoya. Coastal and inland trade linked different communities, but political borders and dependencies changed over time. Archaeology, oral histories and court records survive unevenly, so historians compare sources rather than treating one tradition as complete. Portuguese contact with Fernando Po and the Wouri estuary in 1472 contributed to the name Rio dos Camaroes, later rendered as Cameroun. European trade, Christian missions and the Atlantic slave trade affected local societies differently. Local rulers and kingdoms retained different degrees of power and negotiated with outside traders and missionaries in different ways. Germany established a protectorate in 1884 and a colony in 1885. Colonial rule expanded plantations, railways, ports, schools and hospitals, while also using forced labour and corporal punishment. After Germany's defeat in the First World War, Britain and France occupied the territory. In 1919 and 1922, the League of Nations assigned about 80 percent to France and about 20 percent to the United Kingdom as mandates. After the Second World War, the territories became United Nations trust territories in 1946. French Cameroun developed under a stronger policy of assimilation, while British Cameroons used forms of indirect rule. These arrangements created different administrative, legal and educational experiences. French Cameroun gained autonomy on 16 April 1957 and became the independent Republic of Cameroon on 1 January 1960. The Union des Populations du Cameroun, usually called the UPC, demanded independence and reunification and became involved in armed conflict and repression. Accounts of the conflict differ in how they describe legitimacy, responsibility and the scale of violence. UN-supervised plebiscites on 11 February 1961 produced different outcomes: Northern British Cameroons joined Nigeria, while Southern British Cameroons joined Cameroon. On 1 October 1961, the Federal Republic of Cameroon brought East and West Cameroon together after the Foumban negotiations. A referendum on 20 May 1972 replaced the federation with the United Republic of Cameroon, a unitary state. In 1984, the country returned to the name Republic of Cameroon. The postcolonial period includes centralization, one-party rule, the return to a multiparty system in 1990, a 1996 revision of the 1972 Constitution and a further revision in 2008. Constitutional practice, language and regional diversity, and economic and oil crises remain part of the country's historical development. Territorial history also includes the Bakassi dispute. In its judgment of 10 October 2002, the International Court of Justice, or ICJ, awarded sovereignty over Bakassi to Cameroon and addressed the border from Lake Chad to the sea. A 2008 handover agreement supported the transfer. This is a historical border context rather than a separate account of state administration. Contemporary history includes the Boko Haram threat in the Far North from about 2013 onward. In the Northwest and Southwest, lawyers' and teachers' protests began in 2016 over the position of English, the Common Law system and political representation. Separatist escalation followed in 2017, leading to an armed conflict, displacement and allegations of human-rights abuses. Government and non-state accounts should be distinguished, and casualty and displacement figures require a date and a named source. Research in Cameroon uses the Archives nationales du Cameroun under the Ministry of Arts and Culture, universities, archaeological sites, heritage inventories, local communities and traditional authorities. Oral and ritual transmission is a historical source, but it is not automatically a precisely dated fact. Law No. 2000/010 addresses public and private archives, preservation of collective memory, appraisal and disposal. Access depends on the collection, institution or community; public and private holdings may have different rules, and protection or consent requirements can apply. Cameroon has no single nationwide history service, fee or deadline. Archive study, university research, archaeological fieldwork, heritage documentation and oral-history interviews each follow their own access arrangements and costs.
