Language in Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde has an asymmetrical bilingual language landscape. Portuguese is the sole constitutional official language, while Língua Cabo-Verdiana (LCV), also called Kriolu or Crioulo, is the main everyday and cultural language. Portuguese dominates administration, education, justice and official documents; LCV is widely used in homes, communities, politics, religion, music and oral tradition.

Tip

Choose the language according to the consequence of the situation: use Portuguese when a state, legal, educational or international institution must process a formal matter, and use LCV when oral clarity, community participation or cultural connection is central. Do not assume that LCV's growing public use means every authority accepts written submissions in LCV; confirm the required channel before relying on it.
