Religion in Brunei

Islam is the official religion in Brunei and shapes the state, public holidays, education, halal rules, and parts of family and criminal law. According to the Constitution, other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony. In 2021, 82.1 percent of the population was Muslim, 6.7 percent Christian, and 6.3 percent Buddhist.

Tip

Plan religious appointments and dealings with authorities in Brunei according to the latest information from the responsible offices, especially for Ramadan, Hajj, Zakat Fitrah, halal matters, and conversion. Before each specific step, check the date, responsible office, fee, and legal position again because moon sightings, quotas, fees, and sanctions may depend on the current status. For education, family, or court matters, clarify early which office is responsible for your status and specific case.
