Nature in Brazil

Nature, or “natureza” in Portuguese, includes living species and the soil, water, air, and climate that support them. In Brazil, these elements form many connected ecosystems on land, along rivers, and beside the ocean. The Amazon is known for humid forest and vast river systems, while the Cerrado is a diverse savanna with grasses, shrubs, and trees adapted to seasonal conditions. Both influence water cycles far beyond their immediate areas. The Atlantic Forest, called “Mata Atlântica,” follows much of the populated eastern part of Brazil in separated remnants. The Caatinga is adapted to the drier Northeast, and its vegetation responds strongly to cycles of rain and drought. The Pantanal is a broad wetland shaped by seasonal flooding. The Pampa in southern Brazil is characterized mainly by natural grasslands, although forests, wetlands, dunes, reefs, mangroves, and other ecosystems also occur across the country. Brazil’s biodiversity includes many species found nowhere else. Native plants, pollinators, predators, seed spreaders, and decomposers perform different jobs that keep ecosystems functioning. Protected areas include different categories with different purposes and access rules. Indigenous lands and territories managed by traditional communities also preserve important ecological knowledge and extensive natural areas. Nature faces pressure from habitat loss, fragmentation, fire used in the wrong place or season, pollution, invasive species, wildlife trafficking, and climate shifts. Recovery is possible, but restoring a functioning ecosystem usually requires more than simply planting trees. Nature also supports water, food, medicines, climate regulation, cultural identity, recreation, and livelihoods. Responsible use must respect local communities, wildlife, safety conditions, and the ecological limits of each place.
