Arrival in Bolivia

Before travelling to Bolivia, check your nationality, travel purpose and planned length of stay through the official visa portal or a Bolivian embassy or consulate. Tourist entry follows three groups: Group I allows tourism without a visa, Group II requires a tourist visa, and Group III requires a tourist visa after consultation with the Dirección General de Migración, known as DIGEMIG. Work, study, volunteering, religious activity, medical treatment and family-related stays can require a purpose-specific visa. Applications commonly require a passport valid for at least six months, proof of the activity or purpose, and, depending on the case, an invitation, police or criminal-record certificate, health evidence and proof of funds. A valid national identity card may replace a passport only where an applicable agreement or specific case permits it. Carry copies, offline documents, the address of your first accommodation, onward or return-travel details and evidence of funds. Minors may need a special authorization for entry or departure. Enter through an authorized airport or border crossing and complete migration control. Before leaving the control area, check that the entry stamp or electronic record shows the correct date, permitted length of stay and travel purpose. Ask DIGEMIG to correct any discrepancy immediately; do not assume that an extension happens automatically. Keep the stamp, receipts and any entry or departure forms. Border practice may also require an entry card, digital registration or another local form, so check the current instruction for your arrival point. Customs is separate from immigration. Every international traveller must normally declare luggage and foreign currency through Formulario 250, using the AN Viajero digital service, QR or app where available, or a paper form. New personal goods valued up to USD 1,000 may enter without duties under the applicable conditions. Between USD 1,000 and USD 2,000, declare the excess and pay the applicable charges; amounts above that range may require regular import processing. Declare cash between USD 10,000 and USD 20,000, and handle amounts above USD 20,000 through regulated financial institutions under the applicable rules. Medicines should remain within official quantities and travel with a prescription. Prohibited or commercial goods require separate checks. Failure to declare can lead to fines or seizure. Customs clearance does not grant a visa, entry permission or residence status. Travelling with animals, plants or food requires additional checks by SENASAG, Bolivia’s animal, plant and food-health authority. Dogs and cats generally need an origin zoosanitary certificate, current rabies and deworming records, and the required COMVETBOL documentation; the official travel guidance indicates a maximum of two pets, subject to current rules. Wild animals may require CITES documentation. Plants, animal products and some foods can require phytosanitary or zoosanitary permits. Check the current requirements before departure and prepare Spanish documents or translations when requested. Arrange medical and vaccination advice before travelling. A yellow-fever certificate may matter for a risk area, your travel path or current entry conditions, so compare the requirements of the Bolivian Ministry of Health and Sports, the World Health Organization, your airline and the relevant consulate. Carry your vaccination record, regular medicines, prescriptions and a doctor’s letter. Arrival in La Paz or another high-altitude area of the Altiplano can cause acclimatization problems; increase physical effort gradually and seek help for serious symptoms. Travel insurance with emergency and evacuation coverage is a practical safeguard, because public or private treatment does not automatically mean that all costs are covered. After reaching Bolivia, identify your accommodation area, the nearest health facility, the available emergency service, the responsible local authority and a reliable transport option. DIGEMIG operates central, departmental and border offices and provides digital services through SIGEMIG and the Ventanilla Virtual. For a longer or formally registered stay, clarify the immigration status with DIGEMIG first and then check whether you need a Cédula de Identidad de Extranjero, or CIE, through SEGIP. A visitor without the relevant status should not be treated as automatically registered in a general national population register. Bolivia has no single nationwide arrival office that handles every post-arrival matter; follow-up support is divided among institutions and local services. For healthcare, verify registration, the level of care and the applicable cost status for the Sistema Único de Salud, or SUS, with the Ministry of Health and Sports or the local service. Access, opening hours and the division between public and private care can vary by department and immigration status. Electricity, water and internet arrangements belong mainly to housing and communication matters, but they can require separate local checks after arrival. Use airport or border information and official municipal or tourism information for immediate local arrangements. Before travelling onward, check the Administradora Boliviana de Carreteras transitability information because strikes, roadblocks, weather, floods and other disruptions can change travel conditions quickly. Keep a reserve payment method, an offline accommodation address, your consulate’s contact details and an emergency contact. The Bolivian police emergency numbers are 110 and 120. Keep valid documents, provide truthful information, respect the permitted stay and purpose, complete immigration, customs and SENASAG declarations correctly, and retain official receipts. Apply for a status change or extension only through the competent authority and within the required time. Advice from agents or social media does not replace an official instruction. There is no stable nationwide total cost: budget visa or residence charges, documents, translations, health preparation, transport and possible customs charges separately, and allow extra time for offices, border queues, acclimatization and disruptions. Requirements, fees, opening hours and processing times can differ according to nationality, purpose, status, entry point and department.
