Living in Bhutan

Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalayas between India and China and has around 754,394 people. The country stretches from subtropical lowlands and densely forested foothills in the south to high, often snow-covered mountains in the north. Accordingly, the climate and landscape vary: the south is warm and humid, the valleys temperate, and the high-altitude areas cold. Many people live in small settlements or villages in traditionally styled houses; in Thimphu and other cities, there are more modern residential buildings, shops, and offices. Agriculture, administration, handicrafts, and services shape everyday life. There are clear differences between remote mountain communities and the better-connected west in terms of roads, schools, and employment opportunities. Leisure time is often spent with family, at festivals, or in nature.
