Crime in the Bahamas

The Police Authority of the Bahamas (Royal Bahamas Police Force, RBPF) handles criminal cases nationwide through its responsible departments and regional divisions. These include, among others, the Criminal Investigation Department (Criminal Investigation Department), Sexual Offences, the domestic violence department (Domestic Violence), Cyber Crime, Financial Crimes, and Firearms and Anti-Gang. On New Providence, the headquarters is on East Street North; on Grand Bahama, it is on East Mall Drive. On the Family Islands and in Northern Bahamas, local divisions and police stations are responsible. Local contact details should be checked in each case. Current daily reports from the RBPF repeatedly mention firearm incidents, armed robbery, burglary of homes or businesses, sexual violence, domestic violence, stolen property or vehicles, and drug offenses. These reports are initial accounts and do not provide a reliable indication of actual frequency; later investigations may change the facts. Annual statistics also record reported incidents as of December 31 and may differ from internal reports. When calling emergency services, people should provide the offense, time, exact location, injuries or damage, descriptions of the offender, vehicle, or weapon, the direction of escape, and a callback number. Even if the offender has already fled, making a report may be useful. No one should confront an offender or enter a crime scene after a burglary, because this can create danger and lead to the loss of evidence. For non-urgent incidents, the RBPF offers an online reporting service around the clock. It applies only to incidents within the Bahamas and requires a valid email address; a report may be filed by the actual complainant, the owner, or an authorized representative. Such a report normally does not trigger an immediate patrol and is not intended for sexual violence or trespassing or burglary. Knowingly making a false police report is itself a criminal offense. Anonymous tips are accepted by the anonymous tip service (Crime Stoppers Bahamas): on New Providence at 328-TIPS or (242) 328-8477, on the Family Islands at 1-242-300-8477, or through the nearest police station or CID. Protective measures begin with well-secured doors and windows, sufficient lighting, and suitable alarm systems. Homes, businesses, and vehicles should not be made easily vulnerable by sharing absence information on social media. Neighborhood cooperation and the National Neighbourhood Watch Council complement the prevention work of the National Crime Prevention Office. Children and young people can also use youth, cadet, and community programs of the RBPF, as well as protection services provided by the Department of Social Services (Department of Social Services). In cases of domestic violence, the Domestic Violence Unit of the RBPF (Domestic Violence Unit) can be reached at (242) 302-8387 or (242) 302-8452, and the Domestic Violence Hotline (Domestic Violence Hotline) at (242) 376-3538. The Department of Social Services can be reached at 604-4300; its Family Services provide, among other things, crisis intervention, counseling, referrals, child protection, and safe accommodation. The national crisis service is available around the clock at 322-2763 or 422-2763, and in Freeport at 351-7763. The Child Protection Unit (Child Protection Unit) and the Safe House can be reached at 397-2550; the Bahamas Crisis Centre (Bahamas Crisis Centre) also provides support. In cases of cybercrime, messages, URLs, and other evidence should be preserved. The available information does not identify a separate public reporting channel for digital offenses, so depending on the incident, the RBPF or Crime Stoppers may be considered.
