Dogs, cats, small animals, birds and other animals have different needs. Food, exercise, activity, care and social contact must be appropriate for the respective animal species. Veterinarians treat illnesses and injuries and provide important preventive care. An appropriate veterinary practice should be chosen for an animal before an emergency occurs. Special local rules often apply to dogs. These may include registration, identification, leashing, muzzling or proof of knowledge about keeping dogs. Keeping pets in rented accommodation is not entirely separate from the rental agreement or from living together in the building. Disturbance, dirt, damage and risks to others must be avoided. Animal welfare means preventing pain, suffering and neglect. An animal is not a short-term gift but a long-term responsibility. Ongoing costs include more than food. Veterinary care, equipment, care arrangements, grooming and possible damage can represent a considerable burden. Reliable care is needed for holidays, illness and long working days. Animals must neither be left without care nor entrusted to unsuitable people. Anyone who finds or observes an animal that clearly needs help should act calmly and inform a suitable local service. Personal safety and the animal's safety remain important.
Pets in Austria
Pets in Austria may only be kept in a way that takes their needs, health and the safety of others into account. Depending on the animal, municipality and living situation, different obligations apply. Before getting a pet, time, costs, space and care arrangements should be realistically assessed.
