Employment in Austria

In Austria, employment is usually referred to as an employment relationship or service relationship. Employees perform agreed work, are integrated into the employer's organization and receive wages or a salary in return. An employment contract can be concluded in writing or in another way. A written agreement is particularly valuable in practice because duties, place of work, working hours, pay and other conditions can be checked more easily later. Many sectors have a collective agreement (Kollektivvertrag). It is concluded between representatives of employers and employees and regulates important minimum conditions, such as classifications, minimum pay and special payments. Employees must perform their work carefully and follow lawful instructions. Employers must pay the agreed remuneration, fulfil their duties of protection and properly register the employment. Taxes and contributions are usually deducted from gross remuneration. The net remuneration paid out is therefore lower, while social insurance supports protection in cases including illness, accidents, unemployment and old age. Working hours, breaks, leave and absences should be regulated in a traceable way. In the event of illness, the workplace must be informed promptly in accordance with the applicable requirements, and any requested proof must be provided on time. An employment relationship can end through termination, mutual agreement, expiry of a fixed term or other предусмотрed reasons. Different rules may apply, so documents and important communications should be kept. Employment provides regular income, social protection and professional experience. Its limitations include, among other things, being bound by instructions and the fact that changes or loss of employment can affect personal planning.
