Occupations in Austria

An occupation brings together activities, skills and responsibility into a recognizable field of work. The same occupation can be practiced very differently depending on the company, industry and region. The apprenticeship (Lehre) is a particularly important Austrian training pathway. In this dual training system, young people or adults learn practically in a training company and supplement this with instruction at a vocational school (Berufsschule). Other occupations are learned mainly at vocational schools, universities or through specialized training. Some activities can also be reached through work experience, in-company training or a career change. For regulated professions (reglementierte Berufe), not everyone may carry out all professional tasks or use the professional title without further requirements. Depending on the occupation, specific training, an examination, authorization or recognition may be necessary. Foreign certificates and professional experience are valuable, but they are not always automatically classified as equivalent. Depending on the objective, formal recognition, an assessment or simply a clear presentation for employers may be required. Choosing an occupation means more than choosing a title. Actual tasks, the work environment, physical and social requirements, working hours, learning pathways and development opportunities are important. Occupations change through technology and new needs. That is why continuing education, basic digital skills and a willingness to keep learning are a lasting part of working life in many occupations. A suitable occupation connects skills and interests with accessible training pathways and realistic employment opportunities. Practical insights help test expectations before a great deal of time or money is invested.
