School in Austria

Children in Austria usually begin their school career at primary school (Volksschule). There, they acquire fundamental skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic, and learn to work with others. After primary school, children usually move to a lower secondary school (Mittelschule) or the lower level of an academically oriented secondary school (Allgemeinbildende höhere Schule, AHS). Both pathways provide general education, but partly have different focuses and learning requirements. Several educational pathways follow lower secondary level I. Young people can attend an upper secondary general education school, an intermediate or higher vocational school, or complete an apprenticeship (Lehre). At its upper level, an AHS leads to the school-leaving examination (Matura) and mainly prepares students for further education. Vocational schools combine general subjects with vocational knowledge, for example in technology, business, tourism, agriculture or social fields. In an apprenticeship, most training takes place in a company. Apprentices also attend a vocational school (Berufsschule), which is why this pathway is called dual education. The Matura is an important qualification for access to universities, universities of applied sciences and other further education opportunities. Additional examinations and qualifications can also be obtained later through vocational pathways. Everyday school life includes lessons, homework, assessments and joint activities. Reports and discussions with teachers help identify learning progress, strengths and support needs. Types of schools and specific provision differ by region and location. Not every school offers the same focuses, supervision times or support options, so a detailed comparison is important. The Austrian school system opens up different pathways, but sometimes requires early decisions. Changing direction or reorienting later is often possible, but may require additional preparation and advice.
