Life in Austria

Austria lies at the heart of Central Europe and has around 8.8 million inhabitants. The Alps shape large parts of the country, while flatter landscapes, the Danube and broad basins lie in the east. The climate ranges from alpine, snow-rich winters to warmer and drier conditions in the east; during the transitional seasons, weather and temperatures often change rapidly. Many people live in cities or their surrounding areas, while others live in smaller municipalities and valleys. Daily life is shaped by well-developed roads, rail connections and regional differences. In Vienna and other cities, commuting, housing and leisure opportunities are diverse, while rural regions depend more heavily on cars, local jobs and personal neighbourhood ties.
