Australia has no single everyday language experience shared by everyone. English is dominant in government, education, and most workplaces, while many families and communities use other languages at home. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have diverse languages connected to Country, culture, and identity. Some languages are widely spoken, while others are being maintained, reclaimed, or taught by their communities. Auslan is the Australian sign language used by many Deaf people and their communities. It has its own grammar and is not simply spoken English represented by hand signs. People learning English may encounter the terms English as an Additional Language, EAL, or English as an Additional Language or Dialect, EAL/D. The latter term recognises that some learners already speak another language or a different variety of English. Schools can provide English-language support alongside ordinary subjects. The type of support depends on the learner's needs, the school, and the education system. Adults may learn English through vocational providers, community organisations, libraries, neighbourhood centres, or private courses. Programs differ in level, purpose, teaching style, and eligibility. Languages other than English are taught in many schools and community language schools. Availability reflects local communities, staffing, and education policies rather than one national list. Language ability grows through regular listening, speaking, reading, writing, or signing in meaningful situations. Formal lessons build structure, while daily use develops confidence and practical understanding. Translation and interpreting can improve access to important services, but informal help from relatives is not always suitable for sensitive or complex matters. Professional language assistance may be safer for health, legal, education, or government communication.
