History in Antigua and Barbuda

The history of Antigua and Barbuda reaches from early settlement and Indigenous societies through European colonisation, plantation slavery, emancipation, labour politics and independence. Antigua developed around sugar production, naval strategy and later tourism, while Barbuda followed a distinct path shaped by communal landholding, local self-government, fishing and migration. The country became independent on 1 November 1981, but colonial institutions, social inequalities, cultural memory and the relationship between the two islands remain part of its present history.
