Living in Algeria

Algeria lies in the north of Africa on the Mediterranean and stretches from the Atlas Mountains deep into the Sahara; around 42.2 million people live there. In the north, fertile coastal plains, mountains, and a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot summers shape the country. Further south, it becomes drier, distances grow longer, and days are often very hot, while nights in the desert can be cool. Many people live in apartments in cities such as Algiers, Oran, or Constantine; in rural areas, houses and settlements are more spread out. In everyday life, people use buses, cars, and, in the north, rail connections as well. Jobs are found, among other sectors, in services, industry, agriculture, and energy; people often spend their free time with family, in cafés, or at markets.
