Arrival in Albania

Keep your passport or identity document, entry records, accommodation details, and important certificates together. Make paper and digital copies, because different offices and service providers may ask to see them. Your first administrative steps depend on your nationality, reason for staying, and intended length of stay. Entry permission and residence permission are separate matters, so a person allowed to enter Albania may still need to complete a residence process. A reliable local address is important for contracts, deliveries, banking, and official communication. Check how the address is written, because street names, building numbers, entrances, and apartment details are not always presented consistently. Albanian is the main language used by authorities and in daily life. English and Italian are understood by some people, especially in larger cities and tourist areas, but an Albanian-speaking helper can make formal appointments easier. The local currency is the Albanian lek, often shown as ALL. Cards are useful in many urban businesses, while cash remains important for small shops, markets, transport, and places outside major centers. A local phone number and mobile data make settling in much easier. They help with landlords, appointments, directions, deliveries, and services that send confirmation codes by text message. Daily procedures can be more relationship-based and less standardized than newcomers expect. Ask which documents are needed before visiting, keep receipts, and politely confirm the next step whenever instructions are unclear. Arrival is also a social process. Learning basic greetings, meeting neighbors, and identifying nearby shops, pharmacies, transport stops, and health services will make Albania feel manageable more quickly.
