Afghan leisure includes ورزش (sport), تفریح (recreation), cultural gatherings such as Mushaira poetry events, rubab music, Buzkashi, family activities, creative work, child-friendly spaces and domestic travel. Afghanistan has no reliable nationwide leisure calendar or price database, so opening times, entrance fees, availability and permissions vary by provider, province and security situation. Formal sport is linked to the de facto General Directorate of Olympic, Physical Education and Sports, provincial offices and sports associations. Research identifies 59 sports associations, of which 51 are registered. Clubs, stadiums, gyms, swimming pools and trainers may require registration or a licence. Published fees include AFN 500–10,000 for an initial club licence, AFN 250–5,000 for annual renewal, AFN 500 per year for a trainer licence, and athlete identification fees of AFN 70 for national-team athletes or AFN 50 per year for club athletes. The relevant association and provincial office determine actual access. Public sport for women and girls, including gyms, parks and public baths, is prohibited or broadly barred, although enforcement varies by province. Women face full-body and face-covering rules in public, while men are expected to dress modestly. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises that women travelling more than 72 kilometres should travel with a husband, father or brother as mahram. Cultural leisure includes the National Museum in Kabul, poetry gatherings, rubab traditions, Nawrouz and Yaldā/Chella celebrations, and other local community activities. The National Museum was active during a 2025 cultural event and holds artefacts more than 5,000 years old. Public events operate under rules of the de facto Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. Music and films considered contrary to Sharia, images of living beings, and women’s voices or representations may face restrictions, so no general freedom for public entertainment can be assumed. Child-Friendly Spaces run by UNICEF and implementing partners provide play, drawing, local games, naats, social activities and psychosocial support, especially in crisis and displacement settings. They are a functional non-commercial alternative rather than a nationwide leisure service and normally have no national fee. Access depends on the local partner. In Kunar in 2025, more than 13,500 children and caregivers took part in leisure or psychosocial activities, while more than 2,300 vulnerable children received case-management or referral support. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Afghanistan, and the US State Department classifies it as Level 4, Do Not Travel, because of unrest, crime, terrorism, wrongful detention, kidnapping, natural disasters and limited health facilities. A 2024 attack on a guided tour in Bamiyan killed three Spanish tourists. Roads and border crossings remain high-risk, and an organized tour does not remove those dangers. During Ramadan, public eating, drinking, smoking and chewing gum during daylight are prohibited, and loud music or dancing should be avoided. Alcohol, narcotics and pork are prohibited. Photographing people without consent, government or military buildings, palaces and checkpoints can be forbidden or dangerous. Mobile and internet services may be interrupted, and foreign card access and cash availability are unreliable.
