State in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a Federal Democratic Republic governed by the 1995 Constitution, which is the supreme law. The federal government shares public powers with 12 Regional States and two chartered city administrations, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. Federal institutions handle matters such as defence, foreign affairs, currency and inter-state issues, while Regional States manage their own laws, budgets, taxes, public services and state police within the constitutional framework.

Tip

Treat any public-service, security, finance or oversight matter in Ethiopia as a level-and-function question. Identify the responsible federal, regional, woreda or kebele body before submitting documents, and verify its current requirements, fee and timing because no single nationwide rule covers every service. Keep written proof of the office contacted, the rule applied and the response received.
